Fashion Fridays: Delpozo

Back in September, I took NY Mag’s The Cut’s Fashion Week StyleQuiz. My style personality was designated as Maximalist, Adventurous, Romantic and Individualistic (XARI) and my designer suggestions were Gucci, Delpozo and Rochas.  The Cut’s quiz summed me up perfectly:

“You’re a romantic but also kind of a weirdo, in the best possible way.  You’re not interested in traditional beauty and femininity, but you love filtering both concepts through your own unique perspective.  You probably work in a creative career; you might in fact be a designer yourself.”

The quiz was so accurate it inspired to take a look at each of the recommended designer’s Spring/Summer 2016 line and I absolutely fell in love with Delpozo’s collection.  The line is known for it’s dramatic flair but also for it’s feminine softness.  I subsequently started following the brand on Instagram and I swoon every time a new piece is posted.  Below are a few of my favorites.

A Modern Take On Four Poster Beds

I have never been much of a fan of four poster beds.  Growing up we had one and if I wasn’t getting in trouble for trying to climb it then I was annoyed that one of the posts was obstructing my line of sight.  In my adult life, I’ve always appreciated the drama a four poster brings to a space, especially when it has a lovely canopy but I’ve never pictured it as something I’d want in my own home.  That is, until, Bernhardt introduced their Kensington Upholstered Poster Bed in a highly polished plated brass at last year’s High Point Market.  Since that time, I’ve been swooning at every advertisement, editorial and designer portfolio that has pictured a brass, chrome or mirrored four poster bed.  In a space where you don’t often see highly polished metals, I love the addition of these sleek and shiny beds to the bedroom.  You totally have my permission to diagnose me with magpie syndrome while you look at my roundup below.

The Art of Good Design

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have your home look like a million dollars.  A good balance of high and low, a bit of creativity and a clutter free space can transform your mess into a masterpiece.  I’ve found the art of good design lies in layering major pieces with smaller accessories.  It is bright overhead lighting mixed with soft ambient light from a table lamp or two.  It is the artful arrangement of your furniture around a decorative rug.  It is the art that you select and the way you display it.  Good design embraces and enhances the way you live.  It rids itself of what isn’t useful and creates a proper place for everything that is.  Good design reflects your own personality and tastes while also revealing commonalities with your guests.  It is not buying a store display of furniture or painting your walls the color of the year.  Good design can be likened to a curated collection that reflects your aspirations, your hopes, your accomplishments and your dreams to all who enter your home.  Below are a few images from around the web of what I consider good design.

DC Places: Atlantic Plumbing Cinema

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of going to see the new Steve Jobs movie at a new theater located in the Atlantic Plumbing Building in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC.  The Atlantic Plumbing Theater opened on Thursday, October 15th.  It is in walking distance to my house so I was excited to be able to take a short walk over and catch a movie on a lazy Sunday afternoon.  Also, I absolutely love the design of this building and am still kicking myself for not jumping at the opportunity to buy in the building when I had the chance. The building at one point was home to the Atlantic Plumbing Supply Company and thus kept part of the name.  I was very excited to go over and check out the new cinema and even doubly so since the Steve Jobs movie was the first and only movie they decided to premiere.

I must say my favorite part of the experience was while purchasing tickets being able to select the seats.  The prompt shows you all the seats that have been reserved (purchased) and all the seats that are available.  An honorable mention is that the theater also has a bar where you can order food and specialty cocktails named after famous films, like ‘Casino Royale’ and ‘The Last King of Scotland’.  You can eat and drink in the bar area or at the sofas and tables.  You can even take menu items into the theater with you and nosh on chicken wings and crab cake minis while you enjoy your movie.  There is a patio area for drinking and dining when the weather is nice and of course, a concessions stand with typical movie theater concessions.

I give the experience an A+, as I really enjoyed sipping my wine from an actual glass while watching a film in a seat I selected.  I will definitely be visiting this theater again once they begin showing other films next week.

The Atlantic Plumbing Building houses the cinema and condos/apartments and
